• De facto segregation used to describe situations whereby legislation did not aegregate students by race, but segregation occured as a result of the mindset of people and hence, school segregation continued. De facto segregation was caused as a result of the refusal of White homeowners to sell to African-American purchasers, discrimination by real estate agents or because White and Black families choose to live in neighborhoods where majority of their own race lived.
• De jure segregation is discrimination of people which is backed by law. Apartheid law in South Africa that separated Blacks from Whites is an example of de jure segregation.
• Public attitude has a vital role to play in resegregation. When there is discrimination as a result of color, race or religion, it can lead to resegregation.
• Brown v. Board of Education was a Supreme Court judgement where the court ruled that racial segregation in schools was unconstitutional.
• It is the role of the state government to make education policies. Education is vital to the growth and development of a nation, hence, government should make policies that will impact positively on education.
