Herpes infection is cause by a viral pathogen known as herpes simplex virus. When they invade a healthy human, they can cause infections which results to symptoms on various parts of the body. It can be treated with antiviral medications such as acyclovir.Acyclovir can be administered orally, intravenous or topical.

- Oral route of administration is when the drug is swallowed through the mouth.

- Intravenous route is when injected into the vein. This process is carried out by a qualified health personnel( doctors) and highest plasma concentrations of the drug can be achieved through this route.

The mode of administration will depend on the site of herpes infection.For herpes of the brains, genitals and other localized infections, Injections( intravenous) is the recommended route

However for herpes at other body locations ; oral route is the recommended route. This could be inform of capsules, or oral suspension . It should be taken after meals or on empty stomach with full glass of water. Although it might not alleviate the pain that usually accompany shingles(eruptions on the skin from acute inflammation)
