Why do we use average force while solving momentum problems? How is net force related to the momentum of the object?

So net force is all forces acting on an object and that would make sense with momentum. Say you’re pushing on a box at 100 N but your friend pushes back with 20 N. You wouldn’t plug in 100 N and find the momentum because there is something pushing back on it and it wouldn’t give you the true momentum
