Population 4 has the highest % variation in the trait out of the 4 species. An environmental change related to this trait happens. Lets say for example that this is a population of bears, this trait is for fur length, and the environmental change is the temperature.
If there is a range of variation in the fur length of a population, then there is more likely that some individuals with very long fur exist, as well as individuals with very short hair, and some in between.
When the temperature drops, the bears with longer fur will prosper, because they can keep warm in the cold with their long fur. If the temperature rises, the short fur bears will be able to keep cooler more easily because their fur is shorter.
A population with more variation is more adaptable to environmental change.
