Excerpt from Travel Guide to the Kowloon Region of Hong Kong
Emily Morton
When visiting Hong Kong, one should venture to Kowloon, which is located on the peninsula north of the Hong
Kong Island area. Kowloon-which means "nine dragons" in Cantonese - is a wonderful tourist destination with
fine restaurants, shopping, and memorable experiences. Kowloon and its surrounding areas have many
attractions that are sure to please any excursionist.
One special attraction in Kowloon is the Wong Tai Sin Temple, which is named after a shepherd boy. According
to legend, a deity approached Wong Tai Sin when he was fifteen years old. The deity instructed the boy about
how to use Cinnabar (a mineral) to cure illnesses. Although he was a shepherd boy with no formal training, he
spent almost half a century as a hermit perfecting his techniques and reemerged as a great healer.
Another famous tourist attraction-one that actually overlooks Kowloon-is Victoria Peak. Rising over 1500 feet,
the peak provides a view of Kowloon across the sapphire water to the lush, jade hillsides in the distance.
