The Beatnik movement was a name given to a type of urban culture that was common in the late 1940s, 1950s and early 1960s. It is usually linked with the Beat Generation of literature.
The Beatnik movement was usually linked with topics such as pseudo-intellectualism, drug use and non-conformisms. Americans at that time might have disliked this because it expressed a view that was against most elements of society. The generation was seen as lazy or as complainers who refused to do their part to continue moving society forward.
