When an author uses the first person point of view, they tend to use "I" a lot. By having the main character refer to themselves by "I," the reader gets to experience the story from that character's point of view.

For example: I went to the zoo with Kate today (this would be first person).

Jenny walked away from me (this would be first person).

Jack jumped over the candlestick and fell on his head (this would not be first person).
