Slavery continued after the American Revolution for several different reasons.
1) The Southern states still heavily relied on this system- During this time, the Southern states still relied on slavery in order to generate a profit. If the Founding Fathers tried to get rid of slavery after the American Revolution, it would tear the country apart. In order to preserve the newly created US, there is no law outlawing slavery in the United States.
2) Creation of the cotton gin- The creation of the cotton gin, which happens about 10 years after the end of the revolution, makes producing cotton extremely profitable. This allows the US to become an economic superpower during this time. Slavery plays a huge role in this system, as the slaves are needed to perform the work on the cotton gin.
Slave trade continued after the revolution because of many reasons highlighted below
- The south relied on slave trade for economic prosperity. In fact, after the revolution the southern economy could not survived without slave labor. Large farms also known as plantations housed the slave during this era and the south major crops like tobacco and cotton were produced by this plantations. The founding fathers were so careful not to meddle into southern continuation of slave trade because its economy largely depended on it and total abolition could tear the country apart. So for the country not to disintegrates, no law was introduced in the United States to outlaw slavery.
- Creation of the cotton gin also contributed to the continuation of slave trade after the revolution. During this period the business was so profitable and this spiked a significant increase in slave trade. In fact, America became world power in this era as a result of how booming the business became. Slaves were in the center of the business because they were used as the laborer and it was the driving force.
Cotton gin was invented in 1793 by Eli Whitney. She was born on Westborough, Massachusetts, in 1765 and graduated from Yale College in 1972.she invested cotton gin just a year after she graduated
