Under the Treaty of Paris, Spanish ceded its governance of one of its longstanding colonies, the Philippines, to the Americans. The treaty was formed after the Spanish was defeated by the Americans in Spanish - American war. Just days after, however, Philippines fought the Americans to gain independence.
