Samuel Gompers
Gompers was the leader of the American Federation of Labor. The AFL was created in 1886 and became the largest union in the United States when it combined with the Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO) in the 1950s.
Gompers' methods included creating unions of workers to address employers as a unit. He believed unions should be based on the trade of the workers instead of where workers lived. Another method he believed was important and is still used by unions today, is nonpolitical negotiation. Unions should work with any political party that will further the unions' goals. This means unions themselves should not be political in nature.
Answer:
The labor leader's union that remains most active today is that of Eugene V. Debs, as the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW), founded by Debs in 1905, is still active today.
Explanation:
This revolutionary union shares some ideas and forms of organization with anarcho-syndicalism and socialism. IWW accept members without ideological discrimination as long as they respect the organizational statutes. It promotes freedom of association, direct democracy from the grassroots organization, and promotes cooperativism through some self-managed companies. One of its historical slogans has been the abolition of what they call wage slavery.
The IWW is still an active union today. The current membership of the IWW is of around 2000 affiliates, with most of these in the United States, and some others in Australia, Canada, Ireland, and the United Kingdom.
