Animals and plants need to get rid of carbon dioxide gas through a process called respiration. Carbon moves from fossil fuels to the atmosphere when fuels are burned. When humans burn fossil fuels to power factories, power plants, cars and trucks, most of the carbon quickly enters the atmosphere as carbon dioxide gas.

The carbon enters into the atmosphere through two ways that are burning of fossil fuels and by respiration of living organisms.

  • Fossil fuels are the fuels that are produced beneath the earth crust by degradation of the organic matter of dead and decaying plants, animals, and animal dung.
  • Fossil fuels like coal, petroleum, and natural gas when burned or combusted liberate carbon dioxide gas into the atmosphere, which is a chief source of carbon element in the atmosphere.
  • The respiration process takes place in all living organisms including humans, animals, and plants.
  • The carbon dioxide is the chief gas produced in the respiration process. Again it is a source of carbon to the atmosphere.
