4 | 2x + 7 | = 16...divide both sides by 4
| 2x + 7 | = 16/4
| 2x + 7 | = 4
2x + 7 = 4 -(2x + 7) = 4
2x = 4 - 7 -2x - 7 = 4
2x = -3 -2x = 4 + 7
x = -3/2 -2x = 11
x = -11/2
so x = -3/2 and x = -11/2
