It is being organized by NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville so as to inspire and engage young students of engineers and explorers to consider and persevere in  the STEM careers. According to  Tammy Rowan, manager of the Academic Affairs Office at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, "It's our goal to keep the wheels turning,"  he said, when explaining that the Great Moonbuggy race will always be organized every year to keep the wheels turning.
