I would say “but i hung on like death.” this tends to create an emotional urgency from the child as if begging for affection. In the first stanza the speaker decribes waltzing as not easy which creates the illusion that hes only hanging on to recieve something in return, whatever that may be. In the second stanza the mother was explained to be unhappy about the action that is taking place, like she wants to stand up to the man but something is holding her back.. maybe she is afraid the man will neglect her too.
