The experiment we are analyzing is measuring the temperature of a pond at different depths.
it is obvious that as we go down the pond the temperature of the pond must decrease as it is less exposed to the sunlight or say open surroundings.

In the given experiment, the depth of the pond does not depend on any other factors, an experimenter can take a measure of temperature at different depths of the pond, and the temperature varies as there is a change in the depth of the pond.
So, the depth of the pond is an independent variable.
And the temperature of the water is a dependent variable.
