John Proctor's character goes through a great deal of development in the play, "The Crucible." At the beginning of "The Crucible" Proctor's character chooses to commit an adulterous act and has an affair with Abigail. He was adamant that what he did be kept secret and did anything in his power even if it caused harm to others. At that moment, he was only thinking of himself and what his reputation would look like if his secret got out. He was not thinking of the pain and betrayal that could afflict others. He was very hesitant to share his affair with the court even when he had already been caught red-handed by his wife, Elizabeth. But by the end of the play, he flees to Elizabeth's side in hopes of protecting her from the execution that the court would soon sentence her to. After realizing Elizabeth could be sentenced to death, he confesses about his affair with Abigail in front of the whole court. John Proctor goes from a selfish man to one who will do anything to save his wife.
