Another event that particularly influenced Bolivar was the coronation of Napoleon as the Emperor of France. He was able to witness the event in person and was torn by what he saw. While he admired all that Napoleon had achieved, he was repulsed by the way Napoleon had betrayed the republican ideals of the French Revolution. Throughout his life, Bolívar did pursue glory in the same way Napoleon did; however, he never forgot the way Napoleon let himself give in to the desire for power. Bolívar was determined to never be crowned a king or emperor. Instead, he wanted to be remembered as a liberator.
