Identify three habitat types (“biological islands”) within the United States that are influenced by the theory of island biogeography. Remember that it doesn’t mean literally an island. Describe why these habitats would behave as islands. Finally, choose one of the habitats you’ve identified and identify an example of one species that would have to migrate between “islands” of this habitat type. Explain challenges to migration that your species might encounter.

Answer:

There are number of biological island in the United Sates and some are which are threatened.

Explanation:

  • The theory of island biogeography states that the larger islands have a greater number of species. The three biogeographic islands in America are Santa Catalina, California, Kauai, Hawaii, and block island in Rhodes.
  • As a biological island, these are separated by different ecosystems and this leads to specification in species. Catalina Island is connected to mainland California, originally this island did not have terrestrial life plants and animals arrived on this island by crossing the open ocean.
  • During the process of migration, these species faced the threat of survival from the blowing winds and swimming in the ocean.
  • Today the island is home to some endemic species that are not found elsewhere.  Some examples of great white sharks that have occasionally been found on coasts a threatened due to hunting.
