What is gate control theory?
This is a type of defence mechanism by our nervous system. In this mechanism, the signals that are sent to the brain, by the spinal cord for the perception of pain, are managed by the spinal cord itself.
This may include the mechanism of reducing or increasing the pain. Therefore, the gate theory can heighten or decrease the perception of pain meaning the gate can either be closed or it can be open. The pain signals will pass to the brain if the gate is open and they will be restricted to the spinal cord if the gate is closed.
A painful or noxious stimulus of pain can be restricted or managed by a non-noxious stimulus. Like a backache can be managed by a gentle back massage.
Therefore, a gate control mechanism helps in blocking the perception of pain in the spinal cord.
