2) Allusion is a figure of speech, in which an object or circumstance from unrelated context is referred to covertly or indirectly. It is left to the audience to make the direct connection. Where the connection is directly and explicitly stated by the author, it is instead usually termed a reference.
Allusions are an artful way of telling a story. They allow the writer to avoid bland tones and common, obvious statements. Instead, a little bread crumb can be dropped in an allusion and the reader can exercise their minds trying to figure out the author’s intent.
