In the Industrial Age, the city planners had to adopt to Railroad technology in order to try and meet the needs of commuters. Often, factories were located far away from homes so in order for people to get to work they would have to take the train.
Think of two types of transportation systems developed in cities during the Industrial Age: elevated trains and subways. Both are forms of railroad technology applied to city landscapes. By elevating railways above the streets or placing them in tunnels beneath the streets, city planners were able to increase commuter travel options and access.
