When you shine light through a prism, you see the whole spectrum of light, or a rainbow, if you will.
So, when the sunlight enter's Earth's atmosphere, the sunlight is scattered in every direction by the air of the Earth (note that this happens on a molecular level). The color blue is scattered more than any other color since it has shorter and smaller waves than the other colors.
