The sum of their ages is 50 so x + y = 50

If x - 10 = y then y + y + 10) = 50

50 = 2y +10

Subtract ten from both sides

40 = 2y

Divide by 2

Y = 20

And remember x - 10 = y

Then x - 10 = 20

Add 10 to both sides

X = 30

ANSWER: Alvin is 20, Elga is 30
