The halogens are just a group of 4 - 6 individual  elements in a particular periodic table.

What is non-metals?

A nonmetal is just a chemical element which lacks the majority of properties associated, ranging from colorless gases to gleaming, high-melting-temperature  of the solids.

Each outer shell includes seven electrons, hence group 7 metals would have to gain 1 extra electron to achieve a full outer shell of electrons. When we proceed up the group, this allows us to draw one electron, making it much more reactive.
