From what National Guard unit did the 369th originally form?
The National Guard was formed from the 15th New York National Guard. The regiment was formed by 200 residents from Harlem. This group was known as the Harlem Hellfighters.
The regiment federalized after the US plunged into WW1 and at this time, it redesignated itself as the 369th National Guard Unit.
This Unit was known for being one of the first African-American regiments to serve during World War I.
