For translation to occur, genetic information on DNA is first transcribed to messenger RNA in the nucleus in a process known as transcription. The pre-mRNA then undergo some modifications before being transported to the cytoplasm where it gets translated into protein.

The mRNA binds to the ribosome and another RNA, the transfer RNA, binds with its anticodons. The genetic codes on the mRNA are read in 3s and the respective amino acids corresponding to the anticodons on the tRNA are released. The amino acids are then linked together by peptide bonds.
