The relationship between Claude and Ralph is complicated due to the differences between the two brothers.

Firstly, Claude is a very serious minded and strong man who is committed to working hard on their family farm. Ralph on the other hand does not believe in hard work, he is a very carefree person that believes in the use of technology for their farm work.

Ralph believes and is very interested in modernizing their farm work, so he buys a lot of machinery to make their work simpler. But Claude is against his decision. Claude sees it as a waste of money (money that could see a boy through a good school) and this complicates their relationship.

Furthermore, because Ralph is the favorable son that charms his way through things, their parents are on his side and against Claude’s decision to dispose off the unused machinery they have in their cellar and this complicates their relationship the more.
