Equilibrium is really just like saying they're [the reactions] at a point where they're both "balanced" and so they're equal, nothing is changing and they're going equally both ways!  (This is just for explanatory reasons, but "balanced" isn't the correct term to use for dynamic equilibrium, as it is used for other things in Chemistry!)
