The ratio of the number of adults to the Number of students at the prom 1 : 10. Last year there were 477 more students than adults at the prom. If the school is expecting the same attendance this year how many adults have attended the prom?

The number adults that  attended the prom is 53 adults

Let a represent  the number of adults that  attend the prom

Let b represent the number of students that  attend the prom  

Given

a/b = 1/10

Let multiply both the sides by 10b

b = 10a  Equation...(1)

Since there were more  477 students than adults

Hence:

b= a + 477  Equation...(2)

Now let Substitute Equation (2) into Equation (1)

a + 477 = 10a

Subtract a from both the sides

477 = 9a

Divide both sides by 9

a=477/9

a=53

Therefore the number adults that  attended the prom is 53 adults
