The Battle of the Kalka River was the first battle between Mongols and Eastern Slavs, in which Mongols showed their tactic of fleeing and then suddenly attacking.
When the armies met, the Mongols used the tactic that had worked so many times before: they pretended to flee. After nine days, they were at the Kalka River. The pursuing soldiers were then scattered and elated by triumph. When parts of the persecuting army had crossed the river, the Mongols turned around and crushed first the fastest riders of the Kumans and then the Russian riders.
When they fled backwards, panic ensued and it became an easy victory for the Mongols. Six princes and 70 nobles fell on the opposing side.
