Edwin Hubble found out that what appeared to be large clouds in space were not gas, but galaxies.
In 1925, the American astronomer Edwin Hubble measured the distance to Andromeda and other spiral nebulae and showed that these nebulae were outside, and very far, from the Milky Way.
Such nebulae were independent galaxies from ours, which indicated that the Universe was much larger than had been previously believed.

- He dedicated himself to the classification of galaxies, in addition to spirals he identified ellipticals, lenticulars and irregular ones and defined a sequence known as 'Hubble sequence'.
- He compared the speed of expansion of the galaxies with the distances at which they were located and thus deduced that, the further away a galaxy is, the greater its speed.
Therefore, we can conclude that Edwin Hubble discovered that there are millions of galaxies in the Universe and that the further away a galaxy is, the greater its speed.
