Thomas Paine wrote "The Crisis", a series of articles that were meant to encourage colonists in America to persevere in the war against the Britons. The series lasted from 1776 to 1783. He told them that they had God's backing in the war and that they will be victorious.

Paine acknowledged that even though they had lost some of the battles, they had also made significant efforts. He encouraged every well-meaning  Americans to participate in the war and not be lukewarm.

He also criticized General Howe who led the British troops.
