The use of mental math in adding whole numbers is generally much easier than in adding decimals because of the variation in place values of the digits involved.

  • Mental math addition involves summing values without the use of paper or calculator. Addition operation are usually solved 'off-hand'

  • Dealing with whole numbers usually seems straightforward and hence, it's relatively easier adding whole numbers using metal math.

  • When adding decimals, the place values of the values being added needs to be taken into consideration and as such its more difficult solve mentally.

Therefore, mental addition on decimals are more difficult to deal with than whole numbers.
