He paid a huge amount of money in exchange for a whistle which he used to disturb everyone at home. When he was told the folly of what he had done, he regretted more than he enjoyed his whistle.
The common factor among the miser, the pleasure-loving man, and the person who was fond of appearance is that they all gave too much for the whistle.
The miser did not enjoy life because of the pursuit of wealth. The pleasure-loving man thought that he was enjoying at the detriment of his health while the person who was fond of his appearance purchased new things while falling into debt and risking jail terms.
The lesson in all of these is that we should count the cost of our actions.
