PERSONAL RESPONSE: Often, people give gifts that are tangible or material. However, in this poem, the gift is one of words. How does what you read influence your opinion on what makes a good gift? Cite evidence from the poem as well as from your personal experience to support your opinion.

What I read from this poem influenced my opinion on what makes a good gift for I have come to the realization that

  • It is the thoughts behind a gift that makes it of worth and not the size or how tangible it is.

Intangible gifts such as the poem that was offered by the poet, Jimmy Santiago Baca can be valuable, and sometimes, even more so, than their tangible counterparts.

This is so because if the intangible gift can evoke strong positive feelings like love in us, then we will value and remember it for a long time.

In the poem, "I am offering you this poem", the poet uses the phrase, "I love you" so many times. These words of endearment will make the recipient of the poem happy as he sees that the poet values him or her.

In my personal experience, words upbuild me. If I am given a physical gift that is accompanied by harsh words, I feel emotionally down. But words of recognition and praise uplift me and keeps me happy.
