The Second Continental Congress refers to a meeting of fifty six (56) delegates who represented the Thirteen Colonies in the United States of America during the American Revolutionary War.  

Basically, the Second Continental Congress assumed the functions of a national government such as;

  • Writing petitions.
  • Issuing of paper currency.
  • Appointment of ambassadors.
  • Creation of the Continental Army through conscription.
  • Appointment of generals to lead the Continental Army.

The Second Continental Congress voted to create the Continental Army on the 14th of June, 1775 from the Boston militia units and appointed George Washington as commanding general.
