Around the fifth century BC, Greek philosophers began proposing theories about the atom. Around this time, the atom generally proposed to be "indivisible".
In the early nineteenth century, John Dalton proposed the first theory of atomic structure known as the Dalton's atomic theory which reechoed the thinking of some of the early Greek philosophers.
In 1897, J.J Thompson discovered the electron in his famous cathode ray experiment. R.A Millikan in 1910 successfully measured the charge to mass ratio of the electron. The Plum - pudding model of the atom was proposed thereafter by Thompson.
Around 1886 Eugene Goldstein (1850–1930) proposed evidence for the existence of a positively charged particle in the atom that remained unconfirmed until Rutherford's experiment around 1911. His experiment provided incontrovertible evidence regarding the existence of a positively charged nucleus containing protons. This led to the planetary model of the atom.
In 1932, Chadwick, working with beryllium atoms discovered a neutral particle in the atom called neutrons.
The planetary model was soon replaced by Bohr's model of the atom around 1913. In 1926 the Bohr model was replaced by the wave mechanical model proposed by the Austrian physicist, Erwin Schrödinger (1887–1961).
