Consider the observation the andromeda galaxy, a member of our local group, is moving toward us. why doesn’t this observation contradict the idea that the universe is expanding?
Because the proper motion of the Andromeda Galaxy toward us ... about 2.5 million light years distant from us ... exceeds the Hubble speed of recession ... something like 75 km/sec per megaparsec as I recall.
