The democratic republican system of government in the United States is defined by the
US Constitution. As one of the longest lasting government documents in the world,
Americans take pride in the stability and fairness of their governmental system. What
makes the Constitution so remarkable was that it was written in the late 1700s yet still
governs the country today. The Founding Fathers had no idea how the world would
change when they wrote the original document. Scholars argue that they never intended
for their form of government to last as long as it has without significant changes.
But what do you think? If you could do it all over again, what changes would you make to
America's form of government? Is our republican form of government ideal, or do we
need a more democratic system of government? Would the US be better off with a little
less democracy and a little bit more governmental authority? What about our system of
federalism-do states have too much power or too little?
