The Louisiana Purchase opened up westward expansion of the 19th century through new opportunities and findings. Part of the territory gained was New Orleans, a major trading port of the time. This port encouraged people and businesses to move in and around the new territory. Further exploration of the previously unmapped territory also resulted in charted rivers, which would make travel easier for those looking to settle or open business.
