[The children who were in Sunday School together are gathered at their spot near the edge of the cemetery, waiting while the adults mingle and talk. MAY walks out of the church with MAMA, looking anxious and miserable. MAMA immediately stops to talk to a woman she's known since her own childhood. MAY rolls her eyes and waits beside MAMA, tugging on her dress self-consciously.]

KYLE: [to the group of girls, loudly enough that MAY can here] Well, I have to say . . . I learned a lot this morning. [after a brief pause] Thanks to "Fancy" over there. [nodding toward MAY] Yes sir, indeed. I may just have to bring my friends to this church next week. They could use some fancy teaching too.

[KYLE holds out his hand, palm facing up, and JACOB slaps it. The two other boys grin and kick the grass. MAY glares at KYLE from across the yard.]

JACOB: Y'all sure got some fancy people at y'all's church. [looking around to see what the other kids think of his words] Makes a fellow feel all fancy inside.
