My mother got very upset. She grabbed my shoulder and shook it. "I told you not to go
there, Philip," she said angrily. "We are at war! Don't you understand?"
"We just wanted to see the submarines," I said.
My mother closed her eyes and pulled me up against her thin body. She was like that.
