Chinese immigrants first arrived in the United States in large numbers during the 1850s.
What is the meaning of immigrants?
Immigrants are the people who relocate permanently to another nation - in search of work or economic opportunities, escape conflict, persecution, terrorism.
Why did Chinese migrated to United States?
The 1850s saw the first wave of large-scale immigration from China to the US. They rushed there to flee the unrest in China's economy and seek their fortune in the California gold rush. Chinese immigrants were seen as inexpensive labour once the Gold Rush was over. These immigrants also toiled in the mines of the West. They easily found work as - as a domestic worker, farm labour, railroad workers etc. The Transcontinental Railroad was constructed in the 1860s by Chinese immigrants.
In America, there was an economic crisis by the 1870s, and employment was in short supply. This started a hard time of Chinese workers. Many Americans lost their employment as a result of multiple economic crises in the country in the 1870s. This led to the emergence of an anti-Chinese campaign in the American West, led by the Californian Denis Kearney and the labour union known as the Workingman's Party. The Central Pacific Railroad, which employed Chinese immigrants, was specifically targeted by the party. "The Chinese must leave!" was its catchphrase of choice. White folks in the American West gave Kearney a lot of encouragement for his extremely vitriolic and overtly racist comments against Chinese. The Chinese Exclusion Act and the establishment of Angel Island Immigration Station were ultimately results of this mindset. The Chinese migrants were portrayed in their propaganda as "perpetual outsiders" whose labour resulted in wage dumping, preventing American males from "gaining employment" as a result.
