Westward Expansion

The United States was bent on reaching the Pacific Coast and so kept expanding westward by acquiring territory until they achieved their goal.

Territorial boundaries v. State boundaries

If you look at some of the boundaries of modern day states, you will see that they are drawn according to the territory the state was in. For instance, the northern borders of California and Nevada are drawn according to the Mexican Cession.

Louisiana Territory

This territory was acquired by the Americans from the French and they paid France a total of $15 million. They were able to do this because Napoleon needed money to keep fighting the Napoleonic Wars.

The U.S. wanted this land to increase the resources available to Americans and to allow them to inch closer to the Pacific ocean.
