total no. of tins = 21
no. of tins given to one man = 21/3 = 7 tins
total paint (taking full tin as y) = 7y +(½ × 7 y)
= 7y + 3.5 y = 10.5 y
amount of paint given to one man in terms of y = 10.5 y / 3
= 3.5y

man 1 will recieve 3 full tins and a ½ full tin
man 2 will recieve 3 full tins and a ½ full tin
