4. What is the equation for Boyle’s Law? (1pts)

5. Use the equation for Boyle’s Law to explain what happens to the pressure of a compressed gas tank if you remove all of the gas from a 5 L tank and put it into a 1 L tank. Assume that temperature is constant. (2pts)

6. Use the equation for Boyle’s Law to calculate the following. (2pts)
A piston chamber, like a car engine, is filled with 1.00 L of nitrogen gas at 325kPa. The piston is compressed to a volume of 0.25 L.
What is now the pressure inside of the piston chamber? (Assume no gas leaked out).

Respuesta :

4) the equation for Boyle’s law is P1V1 = P2V2 meaning that pressure is inversely proportional to the volume (when one increases the other decreases)

5) We know that pressure is inversely proportional to the volume when temperature is constant. So if volume was decreased the pressure would increase. In this situation the gas was shifted to a tank with less volume from 5L to 1L, so the pressure will be increased by a factor of 5x.

6) (325 x 1)/0.25 = 1300kPa is the pressure inside of the piston chamber
