Why is so much of the Middle East in green on the map even though it is surrounded by major bodies of water?

The Sahara desert is the third largest desert of the Planet (after Antarctica and the Arctic) and it takes all the north of the African continent (from the Red Sea to the Atlantic) with an extension of 9 million 200 thousand square kilometres or 3 million 600 thousand square miles . It means that all the Chinese territory (or even the USA’s territory) could be on it. It does not mean that the entire north of Africa is taken by the Sahara dessert: There are some territories with much fertility such as the Mediterranean coast, the Atlas Mountains, the Nile Valley.
