Secularization has always been a good thing for a state because scientific and progressive views that help the state often clashed with views of the church. Religion is a personal thing and not a country wide thing because a country is a country to all its citizens regardless of their race, gender, religion, or anything similar.
There could be no true religious liberty, Thomas Jefferson and James Madison believed unless the state and the church were separated. Beginning with a polygamy case in the nineteenth century, the Supreme Court has cited Jefferson's letter in key cases.
- Jefferson was seeking to clarify the First Amendment's aim as ensuring that the government could not infringe on a person's right of force or conscience to support a church with which they disagreed.

- They desired to govern and worship themselves according to their own beliefs.
