An engineer is trying to determine the height from which she needs to release a 52kg wrecking ball
such that the wrecking ball will be traveling 12.3m/s when it strikes the building at the position

Applying the principle of energy conservation

 Initial energy = final energy

= 1/2 mV²i  + mghi =  1/2 mV²f  + mghf  ----- ( 1 )

given that Vi = 0 also cancelling out m from both sides

Equation ( 1 ) becomes

=  0   +   hi   =  V²f / 2g  + hf

therefore :  hi = ( 12.3 )² / 2 * 9.81  + 4.1

                       = 151.29 / 19.62  + 4.1

                       = 11.811 m
