Explanation:
I can imagine they REALLY wanted to escape from that bondage, if I was one of them enslaved there, I would've, but this wasn't the reality for the thousands of African Americans at that bondage.
They felt, defeated, there slave owners treated them like inanimate objects (Worthless ones) and that's what they come to realize they were, they had no way to get out, except by a large rebellion but at the time that would've been a death wish because they were totally uneducated, couldn't read, couldn't write, and probably didn't even know their own name's, their self-esteem was low, they submitted to there masters.
